About The Legal Foundation of Washington and the Endowment for Equal Justice

The Endowment was founded in 2000 by two visionary attorneys to address the growing unmet needs of low-income families and the unpredictable nature of civil legal aid funding. Today, the Endowment for Equal Justice is the largest civil legal aid endowment in the nation, with a corpus in excess of $22 million. The Endowment for Equal Justice raises, invests and contributes funds to resolve the civil legal aid challenges facing Washington families and to change systems and policies that perpetuate poverty and racial, social, and economic injustice.

William E. Wockner Foundation's Impact

The William E. Wockner Foundation’s contribution helped to offset expenses for the Endowment for Equal Justice (“the Endowment”) and the Legal Foundation of Washington (“the Legal Foundation) throughout 2024. This funding helped support the Endowment’s Voices for Justice dinner and concert and the Legal Foundation’s Charles A. Goldmark Distinguished Service Award Luncheon. The Endowment’s concert provided a critical opportunity for the Endowment to touch base with some of its most enthusiastic supporters, as well as raise funds. The event grossed approximately $167,000 this year.

Funds raised through these donations, in addition to the Wockner Foundation’s grant, go toward the Endowment’s $500,000 + annual goal which grows the organization’s corpus, thus enabling it to grant more, sustainable support to the Legal Foundation of Washington. The Endowment’s annual disbursement, in addition to funds from donors such as the Wockner Foundation, enables the Legal Foundation to grant funds to organizations that provide direct services to those needing civil legal aid. The Legal Foundation’s Luncheon, which the Wockner Foundation directly sponsored through this grant, grossed approximately $420,000 in 2024 and helped not only raise funds to support the Legal Foundation in its efforts but also provided a space for members of the civil legal aid community to gather and celebrate their achievements while recognizing the ongoing, urgent need for continued funding.
